Promoting Fundamental British Values Statement

At Little Crumpets, we know the most practical way to meet the Prevent Duty is by actively embedding Fundamental British Values into daily play and learning. This builds an early foundation of critical thinking, empathy, and mutual respect: 

1. Democracy

• Encouragement of children to express their views, make choices, and participate in decision-making. 

• Practical Example: This includes voting on activities, sharing opinions and learning that everyone’s voice matters.  Children learn turn-taking, collaboration, and respect for others’ ideas, as well as setting codes of behaviour.

2. The Rule of Law

• Help children understand that actions have consequences and that rules keep us safe.

• Practical Example: Manage feelings and behaviour by teaching children to take turns, share toys fairly, and understand boundaries. Children learn right from wrong, consequences, and fairness.

3. Individual Liberty

• Support children to develop confidence, independence, and freedom of choice within safe limits.

• Practical Example: Provide choices during free play, allowing children to explore their own interests, take calculated risks, and express their individual preferences safely while understanding how their actions affect others.

4. Mutual Respect and Tolerance

• Promote respect for different faiths, cultures, families, and beliefs.  Children learn to value diversity, show kindness, and understand that others may think or feel differently. This aligns with Prevent guidance emphasising respect for protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010

• Practical Example: Diverse stories, celebration of multicultural festivals, and challenge negative or discriminatory stereotypes immediately

This Policy will be reviewed on an annual basis unless legislation and/or guidance changes.
